Dawson connection

I'm off on a bunny  trail but  Mary Ellen Dawson was the daughter of Edward and Sarah Dawson.  She was the eldest of nine children and the only child that came to Canada. Three of the nine children passed away as infants.

Ann (Fletcher) Pott wife of
Francis Pott brother to Thomas.

I can only imagine how hard it was leaving all her family behind never to see them again except in photo's as she never returned to England to visit.
The only connection that she had to family when she came to Canada was through Ann (Fletcher) Pott the wife of Georges uncle, Frank Pott. Ann was a half sister to Mary Ellen's grandmother, (Mary Ellen's mom's mom) so one could say she was a Great Aunt and through Mary's marriage to George Pott, Ann became her aunt.
Are you confused don't worry so was I? Lets just say she was related. The point of this was to point out that Ann was the only person remotely close to family for Mary Ellen.

R.M.S. Corsica, the ship that Mary (Dawson) Pott came over on from England in 1910.

At FMP there was a Miss M E Dawson who departed Liverpool on the Corsican on 7 Sep 1910. She lived at 14 Trent St. Alvaston, Derby, England. She was to leave from Liverpool, England to Dominion City, Manitoba. I have a file number 55B-276272, Letter # 238468. The incoming Canadian passenger list has her as Mary Dawson and she arrived in Quebec on 15 Sep 1910. This Mary was 25 years old and a domestic going to Montreal. Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada (she's on line 10)

Mary E. (Dawson) Pott immigration letter.

The immigration letter that was sent to Mary Ellen gave her information for her departure from Liverpool to Canada and was addressed to her at 14 Trent St. Alvaston Derby. At this point I'm not sure if I can assume that she was living there with other family but on the 1911 Census the Dawson family is residing at the same address.
Listed are Edward and wife Sarah, sons Edward and Harold, daughters Dora, Edna and Fanny. Fanny is listed as married and has a daughter Gladys.
The interesting thing about this address is that its right next door to the Alvaston Men's Club which Mary's brothers and father were members of the Club. I sent a letter to the club a couple years ago to see if there was any record of their membership. Unfortunately many of their records were destroyed  during the bomb raids during the Second World War.

Edward is on the far right front row. Jack Leahy, Edna Dawson's husband, is the younger man with the black hair just to the left of center. this is a picture of the founding member s of the Alvaston and Crew Working Men's Club. They called themselves "The Forties" for some reason.

Looking at 1149 London Road from Curzon Ln.which is just around the corner from the Alvaston Men's Club. This was a post card sent to Mary Ellen after she moved to Canada.

A current view looking  at 1149 London Road from Curzon Ln. which is just around the corner from the Alvaston Men's Club. I do not think that there is any significance to the location other than the post card was sent to Mary Ellen and she kept it. Its interesting that the building today looks so similar to the
postcard above.

Post card sent to Mary Ellen from her mom Sarah Dawson.
They would have been living at 14 Trent St. which is right across the street.
The building we see here would have the addresses of #9 through to #25.
More on this post card in a future posting!!
