George and Mary

If you follow up with family members on the Pott side you'll find a book called "Pott Family Before and After 1892" which includes a fair amount of information about  the family of George. At this point I have not published any thing on Mary Dawson. I do have a distant cousin on the Dawson side that has published articles about Mary's brother Edward. More on that in a future post.

The following paragraphs were statements that were documented in the Pott family tree book, given by members of George and Mary's family.

"George Arthur Pott was born June 13, 1887 in Staffordshire, England. It is believed that on Feb. 5th, 1892 George along with his parents set sail from England. On Feb. 24th, they arrived in Canada and on March 10th, 1892 they arrived in Winnipeg. From Winnipeg they traveled to the Planky Plains District and settled on a farm now known as the Roseau River Park. When, just a very young man, George went to live with his Uncle Francis and Aunt Ann (nee Fletcher) Pott. They farmed nearby on section NE 34-2-5E. In the spring of 1910, George’s Uncle Francis passed away which brought Mary Ellen Dawson to Canada."

"Mary Ellen Dawson, daughter of Edward and Sarah Ellen (Toon /Crossley) Dawson, born March 14th, 1885 in Derby England, came to Canada on one of the Allen Liners, the Corsican or the Lunisian in 1910 from Alvaston, Derbyshire England. She came to live with her widowed Aunt, Mrs. Francis Pott. The above paragraph explains how George and Mary (known as Nellie) met. They were later united in holy matrimony on January 17th, 1911. They remained in the Planky Plains district and farmed their Aunt’s farm. While living in the Planky Plains District, George served as Trustee for 18 years. They lived in the district until misfortunes and hard times forced them to move to Newbridge (now Greenridge) and later moved to Woodmore. While living their last years in Woodmore on section NE 24-2-4E. George and Mary attended the Woodmore United Church to which George served as a board member for several years."

"George also was caretaker of Woodmore School (which was across the road) and he with Mary, boarded many teachers in their home. Mary at the same time was very active in the community affairs and a member of the Women’s Institute. On August 26th, 1957 sadness came to the Pott house when Mary Ellen passed away in her sleep of a heart attack.  Two years later on August 8th, 1959 sorrow struck again when George Arthur passed on after a short battle with cancer at the King George Hospital in Winnipeg. At one point George and Mary received their mail at Stuart burn, Manitoba. They lived in Plankey Plains, which is now known as part of Roseau River."
